Tis the season to be shopping—and since it's impossible to please all of the people on your holiday gift list every single time—it's also the season to be returning. Every retail store and website have their own highly specific return and exchange policies. Some retailers are super generous with return windows (hello, Nordstrom and Zappos), while other stores demand a quicker turnaround for a refund or store credit. Some retailers offer free returns, others charge a tricky restocking fee, and then there's Amazon. We believe shopping knowledge is power, so we did the hard work of rounding up the all the fine print in return and exchange policies from 79 of your favorite stores. Pro tips: keep allllllll of your receipts and never checkout under a guest account. Happy shopping!

Does free shipping always mean free returns?

In a word: no. Lots and lots of retailers (we’re looking at you, Madewell, Chinese Laundry, (sometimes) Neiman Marcus, and Shopbop) charge a restocking fee for returns, even if you use their prepaid label. What?! The fee is simply deducted from the cost of your refund so you may not even realize you’ve been charged. Sometimes brands run promos and incentives that include free shipping and free returns. Be diligent about the fine print and do the research. We’ve helped you out below with the return process and requirements from almost 80 stores. You’re welcome.

If I’m shopping online, can I checkout as a guest?

We feel you, nothing ruins a shopping high like having to sign up for a store account. But please, take the extra three minutes and register instead of using the generic “checkout as a guest” option. Once you register with a store, it will keep track of your purchases. So, if you decide to return something, you won’t even need the receipt. Slightly painful now, but a huge payoff and timesaver if you make a return later.

What about holiday return windows?

We’re so glad you asked! Stores know that people are shopping for holiday gifts and many stores do their customers a solid by extending the return window from November 1st to mid-January. For instance, Gap gives allows items purchased online or in stores between November 1st and December 24th to be returned by January 15th, or 45 days after purchase, whichever is later.

Do I need a gift receipt? And can I exchange a gift I don’t want for cash? 

You may not return a gift for a cash refund, unless you’re the one who purchased the gift—and you originally paid in cash. Let’s say your mom gifted you with a sweater that’s not quite your style. If she included the gift receipt (we hope she did) then you can almost always return the sweater (with the tags attached, and within the store’s return window) for a gift card or exchange of the same value. Without the gift receipt, you’ll likely get a gift card or exchange of the lowest price the sweater has ever sold for. Gift receipts > no gift receipts.

Is there a life hack I can use to avoid paying return restocking fees?

Yes! Some brands use free returns as an incentive to sign up for their loyalty programs. A few stores that go this route include: Madewell, Nike, and Torrid. In-store returns are almost always free, but you will spend time in line and some stores don’t accept returns from online purchases. Again, check out the info below for each store’s return and exchange policies.

Adidas

  • Adidas offers free returns within 30 days of purchase.
  • Personalized products are not returnable.
  • Products need to be in their original packaging, with tags attached.
  • Footwear must be returned in its original shoe box.
  • You may return online orders to retail stores. Easy! 

Fine print: Hype products (like Kanye West's Yeezy line) need to be returned via the online returns portal within 7 days of the delivery date. Don't tell Kanye you're returning anything.

Aerie

  • Whether you bought your items online, by phone, or in stores—you can return or exchange them at any AEO, Aerie, AEO Factory, or Tailgate store in the United States.
  • Without a receipt or order confirmation, you'll be credited the current price of the item in the form of a gift card. 
  • Items that have been washed are not eligible for returns or exchanges. But! Your return/exchange can still be processed if the original tag is missing.
  • If you received items by mail, you can return via mail, but the shipping costs are on you.

Allbirds

  • Allbirds has a 30-day return and exchange policy, no questions asked. Consider the 30 days to be your shoe trial period.
  • Shoes can be returned and exchanged within 30 days—even if you've worn them out on the streets.
  • For socks, packaging must be unopened and returned/exchanged within 30 days.

Fine Print: Allbirds doesn't resell worn shoes. They partnered with Soles4Souls, and donate used shoes to them for distribution to people in need.

Amazon

  • Amazon and most independent sellers on Amazon offer returns for items within 30 days of receipt of shipment.
  • Returns are (almost always) at your own expense. Amazon will refund up to $20 for return postage costs on receipt of the item if it's marked as "free returns."
  • Defective, damaged, or incorrect items will be refunded the full postage cost.
  • Some purchases qualify for package-less drop-off at UPS locations, with a full refund.
  • Another workaround for free Amazon returns is to order clothes via the Amazon Prime Wardrobe program. Read our full review of that process.

Fine Print: When you place an order from a seller that ships its own inventory (known as a third-party seller), your return is sent back to them and not Amazon. These return policies vary wildly, so please check their Returns and Refunds Policy on their profile page before you make a purchase. Buyers remorse, begone!

American Eagle Outfitters

  • Whether you bought your items online, by phone, or in stores—you can return or exchange them at any AEO, Aerie, AEO Factory, or Tailgate store in the United States.

Anthropologie

  • Anthropologie allows most merchandise to be returned for free within 60 days of the purchase date. 
  • If returned after 60 days, a merchandise credit will be issued at the original selling price.
  • If you don't have the original sales receipt, your return qualifies for an exchange at the current selling price.
  • A one-time price adjustment will be granted on full-price purchases only if an original sales receipt is presented within 14 days of purchase.
  • All sale items purchased at an extra 50% off discount are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged.

Fine Print: Did you buy the perfect boho maxi dress and it went on sale two days later? Good news! Anthropologie allows a one-time price adjustment on full-price purchases if an original sales receipt is presented within 14 days of purchase. Sweet!

ASOS

  • ASOS offers free returns to a whopping 24 countries—including the United States.
  • Returns within 28 days of receiving are eligible for a full refund via the original payment method.
  • Returns within 29 to 45 days qualify for a gift voucher equal to your original purchase amount.
  • ASOS doesn't do exchanges. Just return the item and order a new size (subject to availability of course, you might be out of luck).
  • If you try to return something 46 days after you receive it, ASOS will not accept the return and may ship it back to you with a shipping charge. The horror! 

Fine Print: ASOS has some of the best customer service in the fast-fashion game. We were unhappy with a pair of boots after a few months of wearing them, and two polite emails later, we got permission to return them for a full refund. No promises, but it never hurts to ask. ASOS does care about its customers.

Away

  • Away's products come with a 100-day trial period—you're encouraged to travel with them and really see if you like the products before committing for the long haul.
  • Returns within 100 days are completely free in the United States. Send an email to help@awaytravel.com to start the process.
  • International returns follow the same email process as above, but must pay shipping costs for the return .
  • Personalized items cannot be returned at any point. Think twice before you add your initials to anything. 

Fine Print: Away also offers a lifetime warranty (excluding the electronic components, which are covered by a two-year warranty) for full-size suitcases. That's some serious commitment from Away. We respect it.

  • Bath & Body Works allows returns of any product at any time for any reason. Seriously.
  • Items ordered online can be returned to stores—but shipping isn't free if you mail an item for a return.
  • Without a receipt, you'll get an exchange or store credit on the lowest selling price of the item.
  • With a receipt, you'll get reimbursed via a merchandise credit or cash. Your choice.

Fine print: Customers are limited to $250 in non-receipted returns within a 90-day period—so don't go crazy buying items you know you want to return.

  • Baggu is happy to offer free U.S. returns on full-priced items purchased online or in a Baggu store.
  • Items must be in unused condition and received as a return within 30 days of purchase for a full refund on the original payment method, or as a store credit. 

Fine Print: All products purchased through baggu.com and Baggu retail stores have a one-year limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship.

  • Who could return a book? Barnes & Noble will issue a refund for the purchase price of the item to your original form of payment for items returned within 30 days.
  • All returned items must be in their original condition; shrink-wrapped products must be unopened.
  • Shipping fees are not refunded and buyers must pay for the cost of shipping returns.
  • All B&N items can be returned to stores for free.

Fine Print: NOOK digital content is not eligible for returns. You download it, you bought it.

  • Baublebar provides a prepaid USPS return label for qualifying orders.
  • Orders that don't qualify for a free return can still be returned—you pay the shipping.
  • Must be returned within 30 days of the ship date for a refund.
  • Vault Points you earned on returned orders will be deducted from your account. Womp womp. 

Fine Print: Allow up to 20 days for your package to arrive and the Returns Department to refund your original form of payment.

Bed Bath & Beyond

  • Bed Bath & Beyond has a generous return window: up to 180 days after purchase. Just provide your receipt and (for most products) and they'll refund the purchase price to the original form of payment. 
  • Lost the receipt? BB&B will try to find a record of it using your credit card or checking account number.
  • Free return shipping is available on most online orders.
  • Items (without a receipt) that are new and unopened may be accepted and refunded for the amount of the current selling price, minus 20%.
  • Returns of open or used items without a receipt will not be accepted. Don't even try.

Fine Print: Seasonal items, electronics, air mattresses, and smart home technology products all have shorter return windows, between 30 and 90 days. Don't forget to shop using Bed Bath & Beyond's popular 20% off coupon!

  • Birchbox makes returns easy: you can return any purchased full-sized products within 90 days—for free.
  • Birchbox boxes are nonrefundable and ineligible for returns (don't worry, these are sample sizes).

Bloomingdale's

  • Bloomingdale's truly offers hassle-free returns. You have 365 days (yep, a full year) from the date of shipment to return your online purchase (in saleable condition) either by mail for free or to a local Bloomingdale's store.
  • Items without a receipt will get a merchandise credit for the lowest-selling price in the last 180 days.

Fine Print: Certain dresses will be delivered with a Bloomingdale’s b-tag attached. Once the b-tag is removed, the dress cannot be returned at any point. So...don't plan on wearing an expensive dress to an event and returning it later.

Bonobos

  • Bonobos accepts unworn, unwashed, and unaltered items for a full refund or store credit within 45 days of the date of purchase, or for store credit after 45 days and up to 90 days from the date of purchase. 
  • Allow up to 10 days after Bonobos receives your return for your bank to post your refund. If your refund is for a store credit, it will be available as soon as your return is received and processed.
  • No refunds or adjustments will be made for any original shipping and/or handling charges.

Fine Print: Note that Bonobos doesn't accept items purchased from third-party retailers (like Nordstrom and Trunk Club). Please contact the third-party retailer where you made your purchase for information on their return policy.

  • Briggs & Riley accepts returns for unused merchandise with the original hangtags attached, within 30 days of receipt of the item.
  • Buyers are responsible for paying the return shipping and insurance on returns, except when defective or wrong products are sent.

  • Calpak accept returns of unused products within 15 calendar days of receipt of your order.
  • Returned products must have their original packaging, including original shipping carton, and an attached tag
  • Each returned item must not show any sign of use, wear and tear, marks/scratches, alterations, or any kind of damage.
  • Return shipping is not free. However, when you initiate a return and use Calpak's prepaid return labels, they pass on our negotiated rates so that the return shipping cost is more affordable.

Fine Print: Calpak reserves the right to reject any returned items with personal contents left inside the product (a telltale sign of use). Don't pack and return!

  • Catbird has a tight return window of 10 days from receipt.
  • The cost of return shipping, $5, will be deducted from your refund.
  • If you need to exchange, return your original order for a refund and place a new order online.  

Fine Print: Sale items, special orders, custom jewelry, engraved items, fragrance, and beauty products are final sale—they cannot be returned.

Chinese Laundry

  • Chinese Laundry is one of those tricky stores that provides free shipping over $75, but slams you with a $7 restocking fee for all returns. Even with their prepaid label.
  • They do guarantee against manufacturer's defects within 60 days of purchase, but this does not cover normal wear and tear.
  • Items purchased during a Buy One, Get One (BOGO) promotion won't qualify for the promotion if only one item is returned. When only the higher price item is returned, the customer is responsible for the total retail cost of the discounted item, prior to the applied discount. The deduction from the return item will be listed on the receipt as Return Handling Fee. Stay informed. 

Fine Print: Write the order number on the outside of the box, which is an 8 digit number beginning with CL. Unusual, but required for returns.

  • Happiness Guarantee covers free returns (including free return shipping) within 30 days of purchase.

  • Dermstore offers an amazing No Questions Asked return policy. The company stands behind their products and wants their customers to find what works for them—and knows that can involve some trial and error. 
  • Essentially, you have 30 days from purchase to either return items for a refund or for store credit so that you can find the right product for you.
  • After 30 days and up to 60 days, you can return items for a store credit.
  • Free return shipping is offered on returns for store credit.

Fine Print: We learned the hard way that any product bought with Dermstore Dollars (their loyalty program) cannot be refunded for store credit upon return.

  • Eagle Creek accepts returns within 30 days of the product purchase.
  • All returns and exchanges must be unwashed, unworn, unused—with receipt and tags attached.
  • If it has been longer than 30 days, returns will be accepted at Eagle Creek's discretion and for online store credit.
  • Shipping charges will only be refunded if Eagle Creek is at fault.

  • eBags accepts returns for all purchases within 30 days of order delivery date, via a prepaid UPS return label.
  • All returned items must be unused and in new condition, with all tags attached and in the original packaging. 
  • A fee of $7.95 per item will be deducted from your refund to cover the costs of return shipping and restocking. 
  • Personalized merchandise (including monogrammed, embroidered, and embossed products) are final sale. Dang.

  • Eddie Bauer wants its customers to be happy campers—and easy returns are part of that formula.
  • Customers may return any product within one year of purchase for a full refund in the original form of payment—with proof of purchase.

  • Since Etsy is a website of independent retailers and artists, every shop has a different return policy.
  • To request a return, return label, or exchange, contact the shop directly through your Etsy profile.
  • If the seller doesn’t accept returns, you may be able to open a case if your order wasn’t as it was described on Etsy.

Fine Print: Before purchasing anything on Etsy, review the shop’s return policy. This is found on the listing page under Shipping & returns. Most Etsy sellers are happy to chat about their products and art using Etsy's conversation platform.

Everlane

  • Everlane's return process is slightly complicated. Most customers get free shipping and returns with their first order as an incentive.
  • To request a return, customers must log in to their Everlane profile, select the items to be returned, select the reason for the return, and then choose the type of refund—your original payment method or store credit.
  • Returns for store credit are free, include free shipping on your next order, and do not have any restocking fees deducted from the total refund.  
  • For refunds to credit cards and PayPal, Everlane deducts $6 to cover shipping and restocking. 
  • Items must be returned within 60 days of the purchase date. 
  • Online purchases can be returned in stores. (But plan on waiting in a long line—Everlane is one popular store). 

Fine Print: Your first pair of Everlane underwear can be tried on and returned, even if the tags and protective liners have been removed. After that initial pair, all returned underwear must be in unopened packaging with the seal in tact for a refund.

  • Express allows exchanges by mail (for free) or in any of their stores.
  • Printable return labels are available online.
  • If you're using Express's prepaid label, $6.99 will be deducted from your refund—unless your product is eligible for free returns.

  • Fabletics offers three different return policies. Returns for store credit are free; exchanges for another item(s) are free; returns for a refund cost a $5.95 restocking fee.

  • When you're shopping at Forever 21, remember that both online and in-store purchases won't qualify for returns if you don't have the receipt or packing slip. Bring your receipt! It's a must.
  • Online purchases are valid for exchange, credit, or refund within 30 days from the ship date.
  • In-store purchases are valid for exchange, credit, or refund within 30 days of purchase.

  • Free People accepts unworn, unwashed, or defective merchandise for return or exchange.
  • To return, print a return label, pack up the items, and stick them in the USPS mail. Free People will send an email with your return tracking number.
  • Items returned within 30 days will receive a full refund. Items returned after 30 days will receive a store credit.
  • A fee of $5.95 will be deducted per return.

  • H&M returns and exchanges are free within 30 days of purchase, to any H&M store in the U.S., excluding Puerto Rico. Online purchases may be returned to stores.
  • A return shipping fee of $5.99 will be deducted from your refund if you return by mail.
  • If you are an H&M Loyalty Member, the return shipping fee will be waived.
  • Underwear is final sale and swimwear cannot be returned if the hygienic seal is not in place or has been broken.

Fine Print: You can't exchange items online. If you want something in another color or size, return the items you don’t like and place a new order.

  • J.Crew accepts returns of unworn, unwashed, undamaged, or defective merchandise purchased online, by phone, or in stores for a full refund or exchange within 30 days of original purchase.
  • Online and phone purchases may be returned to a J.Crew store. Just note that you'll need the credit card used to make the purchase on hand.
  • Monogrammed, personalized, lingerie, vintage, altered, or final sale items cannot be returned or exchanged. Sorry.

  • The name of the return game at Kohl's is hassle-free.
  • Purchased items can be returned within 180 days (that's five months, excuse me?!) of purchase and extends to all Kohl's merchandise.
  • The only exception to the rule is premium electronics, which must be returned within 30 days from the date of purchase with original packaging and a valid receipt or account look-up. 
  • Online purchases are also accepted within 180 days, though you'll pay for the shipping. 

Fine Print: For the holidays, premium electronics purchased from November 1st through December 25th may be returned by January 31st with original packaging and a valid receipt or account look-up. Nice!

  • Lands' End stands by their products. Refund requests received within 90 days of purchase will be issued to the original form of payment.
  • If neither the customer, nor Lands' End can locate the proof of purchase, refunds will be issued at the value determined by Lands' End. (Save your receipts!)
  • If you need to return something, but want to re-order the same item(s) in a different size or color Lands' End will offer you free standard shipping on your replacement order. 
  • Returning something by mail? A flat fee of $6.95 will be deducted from the amount of your refund.

Fine Print: If a purchased item from the website or catalog goes on sale for a lower price within 14 days of your original purchase, Lands’ End will refund the difference upon request.

  • L.L.Bean goes above and beyond for its refund policy. If you're not 100% satisfied with one of their products, you may return it within one year of purchase for a refund.
  • Proof of purchase is required to honor a refund or exchange. If you checked out with an L.L.Bean account, they will typically have a record of your purchase. Otherwise, you need a physical receipt.
  • If you want to mail a return, be prepared to pay $6.50 per package.

  • Lululemon returns are free and can be done in person or by mail within 30 days of receiving your order, or 30 days from your in-store purchase date.
  • Online merchandise purchased on the North America Lululemon website may be be returned to any North American Lululemon store.
  • Exchanges cannot be made via mail.
  • Final sale items like underwear, water bottles, and We Made Too Much gear aren't eligible for returns.

Fine Print: Lululemon guarantees the quality of their products, so if something rips or doesn't perform over time, let customer service know. They might fix the garment or replace it.

  • Shopping at Macy's? Returns are free online and in stores.
  • Most merchandise can be returned within 90 days of purchase.
  • Last Act items must be returned within 30 days of purchase.

  • Mango gives shoppers 30 days after receiving their order to exchange it for another size or request a refund via the USPS Dropoff Service. This option is free with the prepaid label.
  • The other free return option is to bring your items back to the store within 30 days. You'll need your receipt, so hang on to it!

Fine Print: The return window drops down to 14 days during the sales period. This will be clearly marked on your receipt, so check there.

  • Nike offers free online returns for Nike Plus members. Seriously, sign up to be a Nike Plus member if you think you might want to return something.
  • Whether you buy online or in-store, Nike provide 30 days to take your Nike, Hurley, and Converse purchases for a trial run. You can return any item (some exceptions apply) for any reason within 30 days.
  • With an original store receipt, you'll get a refund (or exchange if you prefer) credited to your original payment.
  • Gift receipts qualify for an exchange or store credit.
  • Without a receipt, you get an exchange or store credit for the current price. This policy requires store manager approval and the items must be unworn and unwashed.

  • REI stands behind everything they sell. If you're not satisfied with your REI purchase, you can return it for a replacement or refund within one year of purchase.
  • The one exception to the one-year rule is outdoor electronics, which must be returned within 90 days of purchase. Outdoor electronics include activity monitors, GPS-enabled devices, bike trainers, emergency-communication devices, and cameras.
